Description
A trek of 3.6 miles round trip by foot or bicycle on a sandswept gravel road through jack pine forest and dunes is the only way tourists can access the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, which is located in Ludington State Park, unless you plan to fly and take advantage of the accomodations in the adjacent birdhouse. The Ludington, Michigan lighthouse was constructed in 1867 on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Its 112 foot tower was originally made of yellow cream brick but deteriorated due to exposure to the weather. In 1900 it was covered with its present steel plate and painted with distinctive black and white bands. This Great Lakes lighthouse is now automated. Copyright 2013 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
