VIGIL

Shadowed in
prayer-worn chapel

disciples lay
God's body on stone

their candlelit
faces yet radiating

love sculpted
as grief.

HAT TRICK

Mere illusion,
rabbit in the hat
hocus-pocus

dazzles
the empty with
cheap tricks

mocking God's love.

AT THE LAST

As sun and moon circle
in forward thrust, that
rascal time runs fleetly
on — through joys, dark

fears, and body clocks,
until at last unwound —
released, like us, to a
new dawning’s light.

SHORE SOUNDS

Hear, all you with ears.
Burnished leaves whisper,
hawks beat the heavens,
soar in cadenced rest.
Toward surging sea
hushed monarchs wing
far sacrifice, while
silent stones, my own
heart cry bless Him
who ever hears us true.

MARSH WALK

the marsh walk
deserted but for redwings
pervasive in their calling

the pallid pond
edged with tattered cattails,
mute relics of a vigor lost

the slight breeze −
all presuppose a lavish,
though belated, spring

OFFERING

Rolling,
breaking,
fizzling like the
head on a freshly-poured drink,
the ocean draws me into a
bubbling calm —

swelling,
raising clear fluid walls,
hurling its sleek self and me
heels over head in
sudden, white
crushing.

Wading now
with wary gulls, I
offer respect from
dominion’s fringe.

The poem was written after swimming in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. As may be seen in the photo, which was taken fifteen years later at Point Pelee National Park in Ontario, Canada, I still am wading with seagulls at water's edge.

Three huge clocks in Musee d' Orsay captured my attention on my first visit to Paris. As I sat in the top floor cafeteria eating a bite of lunch and looking at the city through this very clock, I made a little sketch in my journal and wrote a few words, which later turned into a poem called "Time Study."

I have been thinking about time off and on ever since.

So when I returned to Paris a few years later, I made it a priority to return to d' Orsay, where I took photos of all three clocks, including this one, a print of which hangs in my living room... nice enough, but a poor substitute for a visit to Paris.

TIME STUDY

More than
thirty feet
from the hour
to the half,
clear but for a
translucent ring of
Roman numerals
reading
in reverse,

its ornate
black hands
pivot
steadily,
clocking cityscape
and river,
while from
the cafe inside
we try to

discern
time's outskirts
through its
glass face.

ANTICIPATION

Wreathed in hope,
a porch light glows,
waiting with
all creation to
welcome the Holy Child.

The story of this unlikely subject goes something like this: I was sitting in my doctor's examining room waiting be seen. Nothing was of particular interest in the small unpretentious room, until sunlight began to edge through the slats of the window blind, striping the adjacent sink, towel dispenser, waste bin, and wall. No longer a burden, the long wait suddenly had become a photo op in black and white.

Realizing that often the beauty of entire woods and the trees in them are admired while individual leaves go unnoticed, I decided yesterday to separate from my large collection of nature images those which focus only on leaves. And when I had finished entering them into my new Leaf Photography Gallery, I was dismayed to find it relatively empty. Evidently, I frequently have failed to enjoy my walks in the woods leaf by leaf!

I found this skeletal leaf lying on the lawn on the neighbor's side of my driveway and gingerly picked it up and carried it into the house for a photo shoot.
