Description
A trek of 3.6 miles round trip by foot or bicycle on a sandswept gravel road through jack pine forest and dunes is the only way tourists can access the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. Located in Ludington State Park on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, it was constructed in 1867. Its 112 foot tower was originally made of yellow cream brick but deteriotated due to exposure to the weather. In 1900 it was covered with its present steel plate and painted with distinctive black and white bands. The light is now automated. Ludington, Michigan. Copyright 2013 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
