Description
The flag of the City of Detroit, Michigan portrays its early history. Five gold fleur-de-lis on a white field refer its founding as a French fort and settlement in 1701. Three gold lions on a red field refer subsequent British presence and influence, and the 13 stars on a blue field and 13 red and white stripes refer the original colonies of the United States. The seal in the center of this detail of the flag refers to a fire which burned the entire city except for one building in 1805. The Latin words, written by Gabriel Richard, read Speramus Meliora (We hope for better things) and Resurget Cineribus (It will rise from the ashes). Copyright 2016 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
