Description
Claimed to be the largest in the world, this operating weathervane stands in the town square of Montague, Michigan on White Lake. Made of hand formed aluminum, it is 48 feet high, 14 feet long, and weighs 4,300 pounds. The ship on top is the Ella Ellenwood, a Great Lakes lumber schooner whose home port was White Lake, which empties into Lake Michigan. In October of 1901 it ran aground with a full load eight miles off Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The crew abandoned ship. Wind and waves broke it to pieces. The next spring part of the nameplate bearing the word Ellenwood was found. It had drifted home. Copyright 2011 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Many thanks for your gracious response, Brian. I drove past this again just last week on a dull gray cloud kind of day and was glad to have had the opportunity to take this photo previously.

Magnificent portrait, Ann, of this awesome weathervane! The details and lighting are superb, combined with the textures of the beautiful blue sky. Excellent perspective... outstanding work! F/L
