Description
The only lighthouse in the United States to be constructed entirely of marble is the William Livingstone Memorial Light in Belle Isle State Park in Detroit. Designed by famed architect Albert Kahn in the Art Deco style, it was built at a cost of $100,000 in 1929 and dedicated in 1930. Its octagonal base is 58 feet tall. The bronze lantern room at the top brings its total height to 84 feet. The lighthouse is located near the point where Lake St. Clair flows into the Detroit River, both of which are part of the Great Lakes navigational system. The lighthouse was erected to honor William Livingstone, a Detroit resident who was president of the Lakes Carrier Association from 1902 to1926 and who was responsible for overseeing many navigational improvements on the Great Lakes in the early 20th century. Thank you very much, Mark. This is one of Detroit's hidden gems, which is just being discovered by long time residents of the area, including me.

Many thanks, Steve. I was born and raised in Detroit and still live in the Detroit Metro area. Yet, I did not know of the light's existence until this past year. Since Belle Isle is now managed by the Michigan State Park system, signage and access to many sites, and the sites themselves, have improved greatly.
