Description
The monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) is an evergreen which grows as high as 130 feet. Sometimes called monkey tail tree or Chilean pine, its trunk may measure 7 feet in diameter. The leaves are thick, tough and scale-like, with sharp edges and tips, and the seeds are edible. Native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina, it is a hardy tree which grows well in New Zealand and parts of Australia, in western Europe, and on the west coast of North America. This monkey puzzle tree was photographed in British Columbia, Canada. Copyright 2006 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
