Description
The Wawatam Lighthouse in downtown St. Ignace, Michigan has a brief and unusual history. In1998 the steel tower was built far from navigable waters outside of a Welcome Center in Monroe, Michigan near the border of Ohio. It was moved in 2006 to the Upper Peninsula and is now designated an official U.S. Coast Guard Lighthouse, its automated light guiding mariners in summer and snowmobilers in winter as they travel to and from Mackinac Island and other areas bounding the Straits of Mackinac.
