Description
A trek of 3.6 miles round trip by foot or bicycle on a sandswept gravel road through jack pine forest and dunes is the only way visitors can access the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, which is located in Ludington State Park. The lighthouse was constructed in 1867 on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Its 112 foot tower was originally made of yellow cream brick, but deteriotated due to exposure to the weather. In 1900 it was covered with its present steel plate and painted with distinctive black and white bands. The light is now automated. Ludington, Michigan. Copyright 2013 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
