Description
Bloodroot plants (Sanguinaria canadensis) push through a tangle of fallen twigs and last autumn's decomposing leaves on the forest floor. The early spring flowers offer hikers a welcome foretaste the season's beauty. Though not on the list of endangered wildflowers, their continued existence is considered precarious. For this reason, and because the red juice contained in the stems may cause blisters or a rash, they are best left unpicked. Southeastern Michigan, April 23, 2014. Copyright 2014 Ann Horn. I always enjoy images that juxtapose life and death. Death and renewal and the continuation of life spring forth and the dead leaves decomposing, becoming nourishment to the new life. Everything breaks down and lives on in the new, easily recognizable by its vigor. It is very fascinating to me.
