Description
The only public operating lighthouse in Indiana, the Michigan City East Breakwater Light was built in 1904, along with a small cylindrical tower on the west breakwater. The catwalk, an elevated walkway, was used by the lighthouse keepers for access until the lighthouse was taken over by the United States Coast Guard in 1939 and electrified. Michigan City, Indiana, located on the Lake Michigan shore, acquired the historic lighthouse in 2007. Copyright 2018 Ann Horn. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
